I am a faculty member of the Department of Geology & Geophysics at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. I have been involved with teaching and research in the field of Remote Sensing and GIS.

I am interested to undergo this Training, so that I can teach and carry out research in this field of activity to our Under graduate, Post graduate as well as Research Scholars, since IIT being a premier Institute, many candidates are interested to join here at different levels. Further, this will also give us an opportunity to undertake collaborative research study on regional scale, as suggested by you.

I believe all travel, lodging and boarding facilities will be provided by your University. I would like to know what are the dates fixed for the said Training Programme.

Dear Dr. Pascual, all:

The training and symposium sounds very interesting.  Perhaps you would be interested in a free tool and satellite data provided by NASA and the US Geological Survey.  Its called TerraLook, and provides time series of georeferenced jpeg images plus image processing/GIS software.  It is intended to provide easy access to satellite images for users with little or no prior experience, though it also proves useful for experienced users who want a quick image, such as for a presentation.

The data includes global coverage layers of "best available" Landsat images from about 1975, 1990, 2000 (and, soon, 2005).  ASTER data are also available, and access is provided to the entire ASTER archive of about 2 million images going back to 2000.  While full ASTER datasets cost about USD100 per scene, these jpeg images are completely free.

The open source tool supports basic image processing and GIS functions; a major update will be available around the end of the year.  In fact, participation in tool development is welcome for those who enjoy programming.  The tool can be downloaded from the above website.

Also, collections of images on a country-by-country basis have been made for many countries (including Vietnam and the other countries of SE Asia) and can be downloaded (if these are of interest I can provide master copies on media to Dr Pascual).  PowerPoint tutorials are also available from the above site.

Finally, I should also mention that requests for new ASTER acquisitions are also free, so that if you cannot find the image you need in the ASTER archive, you can request an acquisition; only a short justification and approval is required.  Once the data are acquired you can then access a georeferenced jpeg of it for free using TerraLook.  More information on ASTER is available at http://asterweb.jpl.nasa.gov/

Geomatic Consulting International is an internationally managed survey and
mapping company resident in Vietnam.

We are currently seeking a number of GIS professionals for project work in
Vietnam.  Projects require both Vietnamese nationals as well as
international Team Leaders and Specialists with the following capabilities
and experience:

o        Training and education in the field of applying Geo-information
techniques to earth sciences,

o        Qualifications in flood hydrology and river hydraulics, GIS/RS,
hazard mapping,

o        GIS design and operation experience,

o        Ability to speak fluent English and prepare written reports in
English,

o        Training experience.

Projects start in July and August, 2009 with specialist input periods
ranging from 4 to 12 months.
